We sat down with our Ambassador Sean Handlin (www.instagram.com/seanhandlin) for a Q&A on fitness, cheat meals and staying motivated.
What got you into training and reaching your current level of fitness?
Going through high school I was generally quite skinny and in order to increase my ability in all areas on the sporting field, I realised I would need to put on some muscle and gain strength. One day I came home from rugby training and my olders brother (I’m 1 of 6 kids) were heading to the gym and despite my initial reluctance to join them, I ended up following suit and haven’t looked back since.
The first time I went with them, it was an eye opening experience because I realised that it was all on me and how hard I wanted to push myself. Training is as much mental as it is physical. Getting into this mindset became a reoccurrence each week. After 4 weeks of consistently training, I started to notice my strength had already increased and I had bigger arm muscles to match! From this point onwards, it became an addiction. I was also training 5 times a week on the rugby field and on the basketball court – it was hard to fit it all in but I sure gave it my best shot!
Throughout high school playing rugby, I experienced some horrible injuries, shattering both ankles and experiencing stress fractures in my back. Returning from injury, I had a lot of rehabilitation to do and this also had me in the gym each day. Once I finished school, the gym became a happy place for me and after each session (much like now), I would leave with a real sense of achievement. It’s now a big part of my lifestyle each and every day.
Which gym do you train at and why?
I am a big believer in loyalty and throughout my fitness career this Health Club has been extremely loyal to me. I currently train at Millennium Health Club, Waitara. This is a great gym for anyone that likes health and fitness and wants to hit the gym. Millennium provides friendly staff and extremely versatile & knowledgeable trainers. Packed with variety of equipment, realistic membership fees and specialising in group classes – Yoga, Pilates, TRX, Boxing, Zumba, Body Pump and RPM to name a few. The reason I train here is because it's close to home and provides me with the flexibility whilst work is busy. The opening hours are early and finish late and with this I know I can always fit my session in at some point.
